To apply to an NSU alternate certification program:
  • Complete the College of Education and Human Development (COEHD) application for the alternate certification program and the Louisiana Department of Education Professional Conduct Form. (To submit these PDF forms electronically, SAVE and then SHARE document.)
  • Submit a resume and official PRAXIS I and II scores (if you have taken those tests). These forms and information may be submitted electronically to TEACHNorthwestern@nsula.edu or by mail to the Office of Teacher Certification, NSU COE&HD, Natchitoches, LA 71497.
  • Official transcripts: Please, send this Transcript Request Form to all colleges attended.
  • Submit Complete a Graduate School application (available at: www.nsula.edu/graduatestudies). All students who are admitted to an Alternate Certification program must also be admitted to the Graduate School. For Graduate School information, please call 1-800-232-9892. 
  • Register for and present passing scores on the following examinations:
    • PRAXIS I Pre-Prefessional Skills tests (Reading, Writing and Mathematics). If you have an earned Master's degree, an ACT composite score of at least 22, or an SAT combined verbal and math score of at least 1030, the PRAXIS I exam is not required.
    • PRAXIS II Content Area exam in your certification area. (Information regarding tests required by Louisiana is available on the last pages of the alternate certification packet.)
    • GRE (Graduate Record Examination): GRE registration information may be found at www.gre.org/splash.html
